Course Overview
Description
This two day course is an introduction to design, focussing on sketching and model making. There are a number of steps involved in creating a new design and these two are probably the most important.
The free thinking, creative, playful mindset needed for designing a piece of furniture is different to the careful meticulous mindset used for making furniture. We need to leave behind negative thoughts and self-critique, feasibility, how to make, what will someone else think etc.
Participants should develop a visual library before the course – this can be images of anything that delights your eye and resonates with you – furniture, but also architecture, painting, sculpture, trees, leaves, branches etc. Make areal or digital scrap book, and keep adding to it.
Day one will be devoted to sketching – making many, many, many thumbnail sketches. These sketches need not be accurate. Nor do they need to make sense to anyone else. They are simply a quick exploration of ideas. The biggest obstacle is a mindset of “I cannot draw”. That’s why they’re called sketches.
