Course Overview
Description
Leather and wood are two repurposed natural materials that have a long history of utility for humanity. They can both be worked manually with relatively simple tools and techniques. Both involve creating and implementing designs tailored to the maker’s requirements.
This course is designed for members new to working with leather. It will introduce joinery skills for both garment and leather hide. Two methods will be taught. The first will be saddle stitching and the second, edge lacing. Saddle stitching ensures strong, durable seams that are stronger than machine stitching. Edge lacing creates amore decorative join between different parts of a leather project.
Woodworkers most often use leather to protect their edged tools. Participants may choose to bring a hand tool for which they will design and make a cover on the day. They will also leave with a kit of materials that will allow then to continue their leatherwork at their leisure.
